CRYO OR LIPO?

CRYO OR LIPO?

30th January 2023 . PRESSE

While body contouring techniques are experiencing expo-nential growth, liposuction remains one of the most frequent-ly-performed surgical procedures in France and worldwide. So, what role does cryolipolysis play in comparison with lipo-suction?

How does it work, what results can we expect and how can it be used as a complement to liposuction? Here, we try to demonstrate that these two techniques are not only complementary but also synergetic.

Mechanism and scope of action Liposuction has been around for over a century, and with the introduction of sponge-tipped cannulas and assisted-liposuction devices, its after-effects are simpler, less painful and the results are optimised. Nevertheless, it is only recommended for treating large areas, whereas cryolipolysis targets localised fat stores in patients with a BMI of less than 30. Cryolipolysis resulted from studies carried out at Harvard Uni-versity (in the 1970s) and the fact that adipocytes are more sen-sitive to cold than the skin’s muscle or nerve cells.

By applying vacuum-type suction devices in a focused way onto localised fat stores, the fat cells self-destruct by apoptosis. The adipocytes are eliminated in a natural way and there is no increase in trigly-cerides or cholesterol in the blood. Patient selection is one of the most important stages when using this technology, in order to ensure the treatment’s safety and effi cacy. The patient should be over 18, with a minimum of 2cm of excess fat on the treatment area and must present no counterindica-tions.
